Passing the time in prayer :
Praying for
your (future) spouse.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”
‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. EVERYTHING, this means work, day to day struggles, family, friends, and your spouse or future spouse. Prayer is one thing that gets me through every day, good or bad, happy or sad, I always know that God has my back and will get me through when I bring everything to him in prayer. In this post I want to focus on praying for your spouse, or in my case (and a few others cases) future spouse.

Praying for your future spouse.

So why is praying for your future spouse so important? It helps you get into the habit of sacrificing yourself and time for someone else, praying for someone specifically is not always an easy or quick thing to do. It also keeps your mind on what’s important, sometimes we feel we need to settle for something less than God’s best for us, and this helps us focus on the kind of Godly person that we should be focusing on. It invites God into your decision making, you take the time to carefully listen to God and let Him tell you who and what you should be looking for. It’s important to let God lead and follow his plan for you, you may have to spend a little extra time waiting but it’ll be well worth the wait.

Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
Psalm 27:14

What do I pray for?

Now I know what you’re thinking, “yeah praying is great and all, but how do I know what to pray for?”, Pray for Godly qualities and you can never go wrong! In 2014 I stumbled across a book called “Praying for your future husband: Preparing your heart for his” by Robin Jones Gunn and Tricia Goyer (check it out the amazon link at the bottom if you’d like to give it a read! I highly recommend it.). This book shows you why it’s important to pray for your future spouse, practical easy ways to pray for them, and it also walks you through ways to pray for your future husband. While reading this book I decided and was encouraged to start a prayer journal for my future husband, and I continue to write in and pray through this journal. My hope is that one day if and when I get married, I can give this book to my husband, the book filled with verses, quotes, and prayers just for him.

Here’s a shortlist of some things that are in my prayer journal and bible verses to go along with them. (Feel free to contact me if you want some more ideas)

His heart – That he would read God’s word and that it will transform his heart, that he will love God with his whole heart, that he will see God’s will in everything that happens in his life, that his heart will be softened by God when it needs to be.

You will seek me and find me. When you seek me with your whole heart. Jeremiah 29:13

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5

His protection – That God will keep His ears open for his cries for help and the battles he faces, That the Lord will open his eyes to see His forces are standing against the enemy, and for all the ways that God has protected him without him seeing or knowing.

God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true, He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection. 2 Samuel 22:31

But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 2 Thessalonians 3:3

May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope Lord, is in you. Psalm 25:21

He is a godly leader – That he is a godly example for your children, and teaches them to love the Lord, That he will remind you of God’s commandments with a gentle and steady hand.

These commandments I give to you today are to be upon your hearts, impress them on your children, talk about them in your home, and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Don’t forget! That you aren’t perfect and God has some work to do in
you to prepare you for your future spouse as well, submit yourself to God
and pray that he prepares you for marriage just as He’s preparing your man!
